Thomas Schoolcraft Honored as Gwinnett Tech’s GOAL Student

GWINNETT – Standing out among thousands of students is no small feat, but Gwinnett Technical College student Thomas Schoolcraft has achieved just that. A resident of Snellville, Schoolcraft was recently named the winner of Gwinnett Technical College’s Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL). The Electrical Engineering Technology student was selected from 90 nominees out of a student body of 11,000.

“I’m grateful and a bit surprised to be named the GOAL winner. People seem interested in hearing me talk about my positive experiences at technical college. It’s encouraging to know that my hard work and the positive changes in my outlook are being noticed,” said Schoolcraft.

GOAL Winner - Thomas Schoolcraft

Before enrolling at Gwinnett Tech, Schoolcraft tried university but found it wasn’t the right fit. He spent his 20s working various jobs to make ends meet. After a decade of struggling, he realized he needed a change. Feeling that he had more to offer the world than serving tables and scrolling social media, he applied to Gwinnett Tech. The rest, as they say, is history.

Schoolcraft has a passion for math, science, philosophy, and sociology. “I chose electrical engineering because I’m fascinated by society’s connection to technology. As we progress through the 21st century, our lives are increasingly intertwined with electronics,” he explained.

“Attending Gwinnett Tech is my second chance to prove myself. It’s my redemption arc. I’m seizing every opportunity and want to inspire others to do the same. We’re at a pivotal moment in history, and there’s no better time to strive to be our best selves. I’m thankful to Gwinnett Tech for this opportunity,” Schoolcraft added.

The Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) sponsors the GOAL program to highlight the importance of technical education. Students are nominated annually by their instructors. Schoolcraft will represent Gwinnett Technical College as the local winner in the regional and statewide competitions this spring. The state’s GOAL winner will serve as the student ambassador for technical education in Georgia.
